James lick observatory

Description:To its immediate west is San Jose, which was a quiet town of about 13, back then but is now a city of a million souls at the southern end of burgeoning Silicon Valley. This telescope was made possible by a gift from Jim and Sylvia Katzman. The former was made possible by a generous donation by Bill and Marina Kast and the latter by a gift from the Clara Belle Hamilton trust. Discoveries by astronomers using these instruments include many of the first planets discovered orbiting stars other than the Sun, the characterization of supernovae explosions that is the basis of the discovery of the acceleration of the expansion of the Universe and Dark Energy, and our understanding of the physical properties of quasars and active nuclei galaxies. On these magic nights, the skies about Mt Hamilton are as dark as they were in when the Observatory was completed. Friends of Lick Observatory offers membership levels to suit everyone!
