Description:Eddie felt that he was ready for Chicago and Minnesota Fats -- the best pool player in the country whose arena was Chicago's Bennington's where the business was pool and nothing else. Three of Tevis's 4 novels are movies. Broke, he becomes involved with Sarah, a student and a drinker, whom he recognizes as a born loser, and with the calculating Bert, a professional gambler who takes Eddie in hand and teaches him that there is more to the game of life than talent. For example, when Eddie is playing Findley, Eddie is positioned below Bert in a two shot but above Findley while still below Bert in a three shot. In the movie, they are competing in a high stakes gambling game for money to determine who is the best player of the game of straight pool in the world. But in a showdown with Bert, Eddie learns something else: His own alcoholism is reflected in Newton's, but it's an imaginative if not quite romantic self-destruction.
